LG Electronics extends title sponsorship of FIS Snowboard World Cup

FIS and LG Electronics are pleased to announce an extension of their cooperation whereby LG Electronics will continue to serve as the title sponsor of the FIS Snowboard World Cup for the 2009/10 season.

"FIS is delighted to further build this partnership with LG Electronics in support of the FIS Snowboard World Cup," commented FIS President Gian Franco Kasper. "Based on the significant success during the first season of our cooperation, we look forward to helping LG reach an even larger audience among its target group, both on-site especially at the city events around the world and through the media of their choice."

"LG is excited to announce that we are extending our sponsorship of the LG FIS Snowboard World Cup for a second season," said Andrew Barrett, Vice President, Global Sponsorship for LG Electronics. "In our first year we saw great returns for our investment with FIS, and our markets around the world saw our association with Snowboarding as an ideal platform to engage with stylish and technologically advanced consumers. We are particularly excited about the 2009/10 season and the opportunities that exist with Snowboarding - and winter sports in general - in Korea."

Snowboard parallel World Cup opens indoors with the world's best at start

After the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup opening in half-pipe and in snowboard cross in the Southern hemisphere, it's now time for the alpine snowboarders to sharpen the edges and apply the right wax on their boards. On 10th October, 2008, the world's best carvers will meet in the Netherlands to battle for the first parallel World Cup points in the only indoor parallel slalom of the season. The race boarders take advantage of the secure snow conditions in SnowWorld Landgraaf for the fourth consecutive time. Overall, it is the sixth time the head-to-head duels take place on the approximately 250-meter-long slope in Landgraaf.

Nicolien Sauerbreij (NED), the defending parallel and overall World Cup champion, is returning home trying to set the cornerstone for another successful World Cup season. Last year, the 29-year-old took third in SnowWorld after being defeated by just 30 hundredths in the semi-finals by Amelie Kober (GER) who took her second back-to-back win. They will be challenged by the strong Austrian team, including Heidi Neururer, Claudia Riegler and Marion Kreiner.

On the men's side, the two-time Landgraaf winner Siegfried Grabner (AUT) will lead his teammates, 2008 overall World Cup champion Benjamin Karl and Andreas Prommegger, along with Rok Flander (SLO), Roland Haldi (SUI), Canada's Matthew Morison and Jasey Jay Anderson to start the season. The Landgraaf finals will be broadcast live both on Dutch TV channel RTL and on Eurosport 2.

Jacobellis & Vaultier dominate LG Snowboard FIS World Cup debut in Argentina

After the season start in New Zealand, the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season continued in South America last weekend. In the first ever FIS Snowboard World Cup competition held in Argentina, the best qualifiers also topped the finals: Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) and Pierre Vaultier (FRA) won the season's first snowboard cross race in Chapelco. The reigning ladies' snowboard cross world champion from the USA triumphed with a comfortable lead over Mellie Francon (SUI). On the men's side, Pierre Vaultier crossed the finish line ahead of Norway's Stian Sivertzen.

Both Jacobellis and Vaultier handled the demanding course which was peppered with technical roller sections and huge jumps the best. In windy conditions especially in the top part of the course, Jacobellis delivered a great run to claim her career's 15th World Cup victory. On the men's side, the windy weather in the upper part of the course also played a role. In the end, the two fastest snowboard cross athletes of the previous season duelled it out between them. For the 21-year-old Frenchman, the unambiguous victory helped him start the season exactly the same way as a year ago when he won the opening competition in Chile.

The next competition in this year's LG Snowboard FIS World Cup series will be an indoor competition in Landgraaf (NED) where the alpine borders will kick off their season with a parallel slalom on 10th October 2008.

Japan strong in Snowboard World Cup opener, Argentinean World Cup premiere

The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season kicked off in New Zealand last weekend. In the Cardrona super-pipe, Team Japan showed its half-pipe strength. In a remarkable starter field, Shiho Nakashima (ladies) and Kohhei Kudoh (men) both celebrated victory. In the men's competition, Kudoh edged his teammate and 2007 half-pipe World Cup winner Ryoh Aono by 1.3 points as he threw an almost perfect run deservedly earning 48.9 of possible 50 points. Altogether 32 ladies and 53 men from 20 nations had travelled ‘downunder' for the start of the season in ideal conditions.

Moving onto South America this week, the FIS World Cup tour will continue in Chapelco, Argentina, this Friday and Saturday, 12th-13th September. The men's and ladies' snowboard cross season opening will also represent the first ever FIS Snowboard World Cup competitions in Argentina. The field in South America features strong teams from France, Switzerland, USA, and Canada, among others, including the reigning World Cup winners Maelle Ricker (CAN) and Pierre Vaultier (FRA). Exciting duels are in store in great snow conditions as Argentina enjoys one of the best snow seasons ever.
